Crawford Island (Cocoa Beach, Florida)

Part of the Crawford Homes parcel, used in the Kayaks and Compasses field trips with Freedom 7 5th graders. A large section of this island has been invaded by Australian pine, a tree that ruins native habitats and that has been banned by FDEP. In spite of the scientific knowledge that biologists have amassed to demonstrate the ecosystem-level damage caused by these trees, and the extra money required to implement "phased" removal, there is a small but vocal group determined to delay removal of these pest trees.
