Wake Island Atoll

Coral atoll made up of three islands: Wilkes, Peale and the central island Wake. It is an unorganized, unincorporated territory of the United States managed by the US Air Force and the US Army. The islands presently serve as a U.S. Army launch support facility operated under a caretaker permit from the U.S. Air Force and administered by the U.S. Army Strategic and Missile Defense Command – Huntsville.

Strategically located in the central Pacific, the atoll was invaded by the Japanese in December 1941 and remained under Japanese control until the end of hostilities.

Wake Island was designated a National Historic Landmark on 16 September 1985.

  • Wake Atoll was technically attacked by the Japanese the same day as Pearl Harbor; however, due to time zone differences, the attack on Pearl Harbor occured on 7 December whereas Wake Atoll was attacked on 8 December.
  • As well the first attack ws beaten off. Only with the help of heavier ships and planes surviving the attack on Midway was the island taken. about 2 weeks later
