Wake Island. The main island of the Wake Island Atoll. Home to a 9800 foot airstrip. The island was named after British Captain William Wake of the schooner Prince William Henry, who visited the atoll in 1796.Wake Island has no permanent inhabitants and access is restricted. However, as of 2017, there are about 100 Air Force personnel and American and Thai contractor residents at any given time.
