The Spittal Housing Scheme was built in the early fifties to accommodate residents of the Burgh. The land it occupies was formerly that of Old Spittal Farm. The farm house and steadings stood roughly where the Rodger memorial hall now stands just about where the lane passes through to Mill St. As a child there, in the late fifties we had a splendid childhood with plenty of open space to play in, and access to the open countryside just a short walk away. Fernhill of-course and most of Castlemilk were yet to come, but I remember when it was nothing but hills, woods, and Bluebells. Oh happy days.

  • Hello Steve, I do indeed remember the name Elliott and there would have been a boy about my own age. were you at the end of Carrick Road before it joined Alloway Drive.
  • Hi olddobson thanks for getting back. Yes you are right about Carrick Road, it woud have been my dad Jack or his brother Charlie you remembered. Used to visit my grandparents in the 70s prior to that community hall being built.
  • my sister Jean went about with a Marion Elliot i think.
  • I remember the Elliotts, we stayed in Alloway Drive and my Granny and Granda stayed in the prefabs on the other side of the burn.
  • Hi Freda, Did you know a kitten named Martin.
  • Yes Olddobson, Kitten Kinnaird is my younger brother and my brother Bobby was called Cat. What is your name?
  • I lived in the Spittal until we left for Canada in 1971. We lived first on Kirkconnell Drive, across from the playground, and then on Lochlea Road. My maiden name is Mulrine.
  • We lived in Kirkconnell Drive before we moved to Alloway Drive Alice. I remember the name Mulrine, probably stayed near you. Did you stay near the McGraths and the Reids?
  • Hello Freda. Michael McGrath was my buddy when we were kids. They had McGrath cousins across the street. I remember they had a gooseberry bush in their garden! I also remember the Reids-Slicer Reid was the dad, if I recall. Our neighbours on the left were the MacLennan's. My brother Tommy (who passed away 3 years ago) was a friend of your brother Bobby. I'm 62, and the youngest Mulrine, if that helps. Are you on Facebook?
  • Hi Alice, I remember Slicer Reid he stayed next to the swing park. Sorry to hear about your brother, Bobby lives up in Sutherland so don't see him a lot. I am on Facebook, live in Rutherglen.
  • Hello Freda, I'm sorry for teasing you, and I did of course know who you were. I don't as a rule put any personal details on line. I was a school chum of Martin's, perhaps friend would be overstating it somewhat, but we were generally on friendly terms. The last I heard of him he was going to work for an electricians business in Bridgeton. Hope he's keeping well and yourself too.
  • You still never told me your name Oddobson. Martin lives in Rutherglen and is an electrician to trade. We are all well, hope you are too. Did I know you too??
  • Hi there, remember the circle? I lived there until 1967 in the prefrabs. Remember Thomas Kinnaird, Bill Coubrough, Jim Fairfield,Bill McGregor - remember when Jean went to Austrailia. Good days.
  • Hi Jim Murphy, I recognise your name but can't picture you. Did you stay in the circle where the Coubrough's lived, my Granda Fox lived in that circle. Thomas lives in Crieff now and Jean is still in Australia although she has been home a few times.
  • Hi Freda, yes I did live in the circle knew the Coubrough's well, jumped the burn many a time with them. Also remember grandpa Fox and Jim Keenan, yow will probably remember my sisters Catherine and June. We lived at 17 Dunure Drive. Sadly June passed away 2 years ago. Do you remember the McCaigs - they also lived in the 'Circle'.
  • Hi Jim, I remember June, sorry to hear she has passed. My cousin Jim Keenan died a few years ago. I remember the McCaigs, I used to play with Veronica. Are you still in Scotland? I remember the Walkers in the prefabs in the circle and when they got a TV nobody else had one and Mrs Walker used to have all the kids in to watch it. That is a very clear memory, she must have been a lovely person to put up with us lot.

  • We ruglonians moved from Regent street to Ailsa Drive 1951 when I was 10yrs old and maiden name Fawcett. Before Spittal school it was still the field and a very large tree used to swing on. Apart from 46 bus you could get the wee SMT 'bankie' bus - Bankhead to the main street.
