The county seat for Songchon-gun, located in south central South Phyongan Province. The town is situated along the Songchon River in South Pyongan Province. It boarders Kangdong County (which is part of suburban Pyongyang and part of its government administration) from the South and with the province boarders Hoechang County in the South East, Unsan County from the North and Pyongsong from the West. Songchon was the focus of international attention in July 2006 when the Songchon River flooded, displacing a population estimated at 13,000. The Songchon River also flooded between mid-July and mid August, 2007.
