Kangdong-gun is a suburban county of Pyongyang. Its name means "east of the river", and refers to its location on the east shore of the Taedong. It borders Songchon and Hoechang counties in South Pyongan Province. There is a lot of mining in the mountains, one of which contains 8 million tons of coal. There is also heavy industry including numerous munitions factories with its own administrative offices. Along the river are various agricultural facilities and KWP leadership residences.
