Saint Adalbert Catholic Cemetery was opened to serve the growing Polish Catholic Community and is the largest single cemetery in total burials. Shrine sections began to be developed after World War II and, in more recent years, a combination Mausoleum / Interment Chapel was constructed – the first such combination in the Catholic Cemeteries. The most recent shrine section to be developed is dedicated to Saint Maximilian Kolbe and was blessed by Bishop Abramowicz of Chicago in 1985. The Mary, Mother of God Garden Crypt Complex, opened in 1990 in the northwest corner of the cemetery, houses approximately 6,000 crypts.
