Ganden Monastery

China / Xizang / Lasa /
 museum, Tibetan monastery

Founded 1416 by Tsongkhapa, religious center of the Gelugpa, about 50 of the 200 original buildings have been rebuilt.
Long seen by the Chinese government as a hot bed of Tibetan patriotism and anti-occupation ferver, the monastery was virtually destroyed in 1959 by the People's Liberarion Army and came under artillery attack from the Mao-ist Red Guards in 1966.
On Thursday, 12 March 2008, following two days of anti-Chinese disorder in and around Lhasa, paramilitary forces blocked all roads leading in or out of Ganden.

Comments

  • During the 10 years of Cultural Revolution, not only the Tibetan monateries were attacked and destroyed, many Chinese treasured buildings and artefacts in the mainland were also destroyed. During that 10 years madness many people, including some of my relatives were killed for no good reason at all.
