Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport (ICAO: KAVP, IATA: AVP) is the commercial airport serving the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton metropolitan area in northeastern Pennsylvania. Although the facility is commonly referred to as being located in Avoca, PA. and has an Avoca mailing address, a close check of the maps shows it is actually in Pittston Township, Pennsylvania, near the Luzerne/Lackawanna County border, midway between the cities of Wilkes-Barre and Scranton.
In May 2006, the airport completed an $80 million construction project on an entirely new terminal and parking garage. The new terminal has many conveniences such as jetways, a bigger waiting area, more gates, and a meditation room.
The designation "International Airport" is a bit misleading. Although there are no currently scheduled overseas flights to or from AVP, the airport does employ a full time customs office, so international charter flights, while infrequent, are possible.
