Part of the Limberlost Swamp, which originally covered 13,000 acres of eastern Indiana (roughly between the Loblolly Marsh to the west and the present-day town of Geneva). Settlers deforested and drained the swamp for farmland; by the early 20th century the swamp had all but disappeared. Starting in 1997, a concerted effort to re-establish parts of the swamp saw its first success with the Loblolly Marsh Nature Preserve; the bird sanctuary followed a few years later.
