Mt. Samalas / Old Rinjani's Destroyed Dome (Erupted 1257) est. 4200 mdpl

Indonesia / Nusa Tenggara Barat / Mataram /
mountain, volcano, volcanic crater / caldera

The name Mount Samalas is identified from an ancient palm-leaf manuscript called Babat Lombok, which tells of the eruption of a mountain called Mount Samalas (see video documentation below).

The summit of Mount Samalas erupted in 1257 and collapsed, now forming a caldera lake (see video documentation below). When Mount Samalas erupted, its force surpassed that of Mount Tambora. The eruption blocked sunlight, dropped Earth's temperature by 1-2 degrees Celsius, and caused crop failures for several years.

Famine struck parts of the world, with thousands of people dying due to crop failures from Europe to Japan between 1258 and 1259 AD (see video documentation below). The Pemanan Kingdom on the island of Lombok is identified as having become extinct as a result.
