Lombok is part of the West Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia. Mataram is the largest city on the island and also the provincial capital.

Lombok has long been overshadowed by its more famous sister island, Bali, across the Lombok Strait to the west. In contrast to Bali, where Hinduism is practiced by the majority of the population, Islam is the predominant religion on Lombok. With mosques and minarets dotting the island landscape, Lombok is also nicknamed "Island of a Thousand Mosques".
