Following her decomissioning, this former US Navy research craft, once the world's largest hydrofoil, was sold for scrap. She was then unceremoniously beached on the Columbia River near Knappton, Washington and partially disassembled before being abandoned.

  • That's... unexpectedly epic.
  • She ran aground on 16 February 1954 and abandoned a week later; she and another barge had been cut loose from their tug for safety reasons while en route Honolulu to Portland without cargo for sale.
  • These are not the remains of the USS Intrepid, but another ex-Navy vessel, the ex-USS Plainview (AGEH-1). See more at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Plainview_(AGEH-1) The ex-Intrepid gounded on Long Beach itself, not on the river, and what is left is now buried in the sand.
