One of Savannah's original squares (1733), Ellis Square was turned into a PARKING GARAGE in the 1950s. When the lease expired a few years ago the city began work to reclaim the square. The parking garage that once stood here is being replaced with an underground lot with twice the capacity. Above ground it is an open, public space for concerts public events.

  • Ellis Square was the home to City Market - the REAL city market - which was a huge structure that was a fresh market grocer. IT was destroyed and the parking garage stood in its stead...If you take a trip out to the Kroger on Gwinnett you will see that it was designed to look like the old City Market building.... The new city market is where St. Julian street has been turned into a pedestrian mall.
