The Cross Keys
400 Handsworth Road
Is the only pub in the UK built on holy ground (that of the neighbouring Saint Mary's Church). It is a very old building, but it has not always been a public house. The original structure was built in the mid-13th century though extensive re-building and modifications have occurred over its history. Initially it was used as a Church House for the chaplains and lay clerks attached to Saint Mary's Church. Later it was further modified and became a school, and finally, in 1804 it was granted an ale license and became a public house.
