City with a population of 55,351 in 2000; eighth largest city in Pennsylvania. The city was named after Lancaster, England. It was laid out in 1734 and incorporated as a borough in 1742. It was briefly the capital of the United States in 1777 when the British captured Pennsylvania and the Continental Congress fled here. The state capital of Pennsylvania from 1799 to 1812, it was incorporated as a city in 1818. An iron-foundry center in the 19th century. Famous residents include President James Buchanan.

Also known as the Red Rose city, reminiscent of the "War of the Roses" in England. York, PA is the White Rose city.
