One of the oldest estates in Baltimore history, Broad's Choice dates back to the 1680s, when an Englishman named John Broad traveled to colonial America in hopes of becoming a farmer. At this time, Governor Calvert had recently established the Headright System, which dictated that newly arrived farmers were entitled to 50 acres of land, and those who paid for their travel were entitled an additional 50 acres.

Broad’s travel was paid for by Henry Hosier, a plantation owner from Calvert County. Both men received 50 acres, and Hosier received Broad's indentured servitude. Upon the end of his term, Broad purchased this 85-acre plot of land from Hosier, and it is today known as Broad's Choice.
