This interchange between US 9 and US 44/NY 55 is infamous locally. This is because in order to get from 9 N to 44/55 W (across the Hudson River) one must first make a u-turn onto 9 South, via the left, then almost immediately take another left exit onto 44/55 West. There have been no accidents yet, but it is widely agreed upon that if nothing is done to change this, there will be a major accident at some point.

  • There have been several accidents here.
  • I go through this interchange every day, and there are accidents here all the time. I would estimate that there is an accident more than half of the weekday.
  • I have no personal knowledge of accidents, but I can attest to the fact that people were griping about this interchange the moment it opened (1966, maybe?).
  • You need flawness timing to make the tight turns safely. Not for the faint of heart. Traffic on route nine here is at interstate speeds. Don't drink two days in advance of driving here...or just go another way.
