Originally meant for the "Greater Hartford Beltway", this four-level stack interchange was built in 1969 to carry the beltway over Interstate 84, and provide connections between the two highways. The beltway was cancelled in the 1970's, and until Connecticut Route 9 was extended to I84 in 1992, the upper three levels of this interchange remained unused. Currently two of the upper bridges are in use, connecting I-84 and CT-9.
