Guardian Park is located within historic Fort Hancock in the Sandy Hook Unit of the Gateway National Recreation Area (U.S. National Park Service). The park was created as a memorial to the Army personnel who served in the U.S. Army's Nike missile defense system in the New York metro area from 1953 through 1974. Recently restored by the National Park Service, the park contains a Nike Hercules missile, a Nike Ajax missile, and a stone memorial to 10 persons killed in the 1958 explosion of Nike missiles at the nearby Nike missile site in Middletown (Chapel Hill), NJ.
