mine, borax

The Baker Mine got its start in 1913 as a borate mining claim filed by a Mr. O. Suckow. It was later purchased by the Pacific Coast Borax Company in 1925 and worked as an underground mine. The mine changed hands throughout the years, and it is now owned by the Rio Tinto company. Underground operations in this locale ended in 1957 when then-owners Pacific Coast Borax switched to open pit mining methods.
