Former residence of Robert Hoe III, CEO of R. Hoe & Company, a leading printing-press manufacturer from 1805 to 1984. Robert Hoe III succeeded Richard Marsh Hoe, inventor of the rotary press, whose father Robert Hoe had founded the company. Robert Hoe III was also an avid collector of rare books and manuscripts. His son, Robert Hoe IV, inherited about $8,400,000, along with the Hyde Park mansion, and ran the company until 1924, when he took the company public and new leadership came in. His son, Robert Hoe V, inherited the estate and branched out into bowling alleys (a chain in upstate New York) and recording music for minor musicians (giving away approximately 250,000 individual records in his lifetime). The estate was then passed on to Polly Diane Hoe, who still owns it as of 2021. The estate is comprised of two contiguous lots that total 31.6 acres. According to public records, the main house is 9,150 square feet and was built in 1900. Whereas other large, riverfront estates such as the Vanderbilt and Roosevelt Mansions have since become open to the public, this estate is the only one in Hyde Park that remains private and in the hands of the original family.
