The castle of Belvedere near Fiumedinisi was erected by the Arabs in the 9th century atop the ruins of an ancient Greek temple to Dionysos. The castle was rebuilt by the Normans in the 11th century. In 1197 the Emperor Heinrich VI died in the vicinity, in the Valley of Nisi.
