The triangular space in this area was created as a garden in the middle of the 19th century, for the Member of Parliament George Thornhill, who lived in 7 Huntingdon Street. Around 1900 the garden was abandoned and in 1974 the space was sold to private developers. Local residents then successfully campaigned to preserve the woodland for educational purposes.

  • it was the local Islington council who acquired the freehold of the wood and then intended to remove all the trees and build a social services hostel instead in the 1970s. The local residents campaign to preserve this green oasis in the middle of dense urban townscape was ultimately successful and thesedays the wood is managed by the council and is open to the public at least every Tuesday from 2pm to 4pm.
  • A simply delightful retreat. We live very nearby in Coventry, and often spend time in this woodland unwinding.
