From 1953 until 1969 (when the school system was desegregated), this building operated as Southside High School, the only public secondary school in southern Pittsylvania County that served African American children. It was known during this time for its high graduation rates and particularly successful agricultural education programs. After desegregation, the building served first as a junior high school, and then as a middle school. Today it houses Blairs' community center.
