During the World War II, German scientists, led by Werner Heisenberg built a nuclear reactor in an attempt to produce electricity or plutonium for a nuclear bomb. The last experiment (B-VIII) was conducted in a cave underneath a castle in Haigerloch. The reactor was created by hanging 664 uranium cubes, attached on aircraft wire and immersed in heavy water, surrounded by graphite. The experiment failed as it didn't achieve a self-sustaining chain reaction. The site is now home to the Atomkeller Museum.
