This airbase was constructed by the Luftwaffe in 1937. The buildings were camouflaged as farmsteads and the base was connected with the station of Renningen via a standard gauge railway.

It served as the home base for Messerschmitt Bf 110 en Junkers Ju 88 airplanes during the Battle of France in 1940. From 1941, it lost its strategic importance and Malmsheim was converted into a POW camp. From 1944 to 1945, it was again in use by the Luftwaffe. It served as the home base for the second group of the 53th Fighter Squadron during these two years.
