under construction, waste-to-energy plant
Waste-to-energy (WtE or EfW, energy from waste) plant construction project currently being implemented by the Belgium-based Indaver company and will be Indaver’s first waste-to-energy facility in the UK with its own design and construction works. The planned capacity for thermal waste disposal is 595,000 tonnes per annum, generating 49.9 MWe to the national grid. The main technology provider is likely to be the Swiss-based Hitachi Zosen Inova company, who worked with the previous developer of the project and already has a large business portfolio of similar projects in UK. The new facility will have a significant impact on residual waste flows in the London and Essex region. It is due to be fully operational by the end of 2025.

Over the previous decade, the original project developer, Hertfordshire-based Gent Fairhead company, has encountered a number of setbacks with the waste facility, which it has been attempting to develop since the 1990s. One of the main problems was obtaining an environmental permit - one of the key was the issue of the height of the chimney stack - at first, a refusal was given for a chimney with a height of 35m, in 2017 the company agreed to a height of 58m and received a permit, but at the beginning of June 2020, the UK Environment Agency revised its the previous decision and approved a stack height of 35m. with the condition of stricter emission limits for the plant (perhaps even then they became aware of the Indaver company's entry to the project). Indaver has acquired the permits to construct and operate the plant on Jan 21, 2021.

Official name from the operating company - Rivenhall Integrated Waste Management Facility. The company claims that in addition to the EfW plant itself, the project provides for some other development (not specified - perhaps one of these things will be some kind of capacity for " use of a heat energy offtake from the plant", as mentioned in one of the publications about the plans of the former developer Gent Fairhead to participate in the project).
