Opened in 1900, the Everleigh Club was an upscale brothel operated by sisters Ada and Minna Everleigh. By acclaim the most luxurious house of prostitution in the city, the Everleigh sisters charged accordingly and turned away any potential client who did not meet their standards of wealth and gentlemanly conduct. As such, entry became a marker of social status.
In 1905, Marshall Field Jr., son of the department store founder, was fatally shot. Newspapers reported that it was an accident and occurred at his home, but rumors persisted that he was shot at the Everleigh Club.
Because of its popularity with Chicago's elected officials, the Everleigh Club managed to avoid closure during the frequent "sweeps" of the red light district, but by 1911 the writing was on the wall, and the club was closed. The building was torn down in 1933. Today the Chicago Housing Authority's Hilliard Homes occupy the site.
