The area of the island is 6.472 square kilometres and is surrounded by 8 square kilometres of mudflats. Pulau Kukup's status as a remote hinterland changed in the 1990's when scientists began focusing on the island's biodiversity a unique ecological characteristics. • The return fare for the ferry to the island costs RM5 (Dec 2013) and takes about 10 minutes. Entrance to the National Park on the island costs RM20 for adults, and RM10 for children. A well organised board-walk takes you through the mangrove forest. Look-out towers give a good view of, and over the canopy. We saw lots of crabs, mudskippers, wild boars, monkeys (some aggressive), but surprisingly few birds. Allow 1h to 1h30' for the boardwalk.
