Butterworth Central Business District (Butterworth CBD) is the central business district (CBD) within the city of Seberang Perai. Historically the financial heart of Butterworth, this CBD is home to several bank branches and commercial properties.
The CBD is also the logistical heart of the entire Seberang Perai. Penang Sentral serves as the termini for interstate rail services, intercity and intra-city Rapid Penang buses, and the Rapid Ferry service to the island city of George Town. The Butterworth Wharves, part of the Port of Penang, is a free commercial zone catering to the entrepôt trade and cargo transhipments.
Ever since the establishment of George Town in 1786, Beach Street is home to numerous international banks, financial services and multinational companies (MNCs). During the heyday of British colonial rule, the Port of Penang (now located in Seberang Perai) was sited here as well, with Weld Quay in particular lined with sea-fronting European trading firms.
Currently, the banks that operate regional branches here include HSBC, Standared Chartered, Bank of China, OCBC, UOB, Bank Negara Malaysia, CIMB and Maybank. In addition, government and private institutions are sited within this CBD as well, including the Royal Malaysian Customs Department and the Malaysian Inland Revenue Board (LHDN). Two major co-working spaces - aCAT Penang and SPACES Beach Street, are also sited within this CBD.
The CBD, which covers the George Town Rapid Ferry Terminal and the Weld Quay Rapid Penang bus terminal, is also a major intra-city public transportation hub.
