Chojijin is a fortress built in the 7th year of King Hyojong's reign in 1656 during the Joseon Era in order to defend against military aggressions from Japan and America in the 1870s.

A battle broken out in 1871 allowing this fortress to be occupied by U.S. troops and at that time all the military facilities, including an armory and a powder magazine, were destroyed.

In 1876 the attack of Unyangho by the Japanese navy opened the harbor by force resulting in the compulsory friendship treaty of Ganghwado between the Joseon Kingdom and Japan. The treaty gave Japan the 'lawful' authority to colonization the Joseon Kingdom.

Only the signal fire and castle wall remained with the beacon fire recently restored.

Presently, cannons used at that time and the castle walk, have been restored and exhibited as a reminder not to forget the historic significance of the nations ordeal and guardianship of the country.
