The 2 and 1/2 story Jacobethan styled school building was constructed for the Detroit School Board in 1922 and was named after Sidney D. Miller, the former head of the Board. Further additions took place in 1931 and 1951. Originally located in a predominately white neighborhood, overtime the student body became overwhelmingly black with the expansion of the Detroit's Black Bottom. From 1933 to 1957, it became the main secondary school for Detroit's black population.

Following the demolition of much of the former neighborhood as part of the City's urban renewal plans, the school was converted back into a middle school. It was closed in 2007. In 2011, the property was sold to University Prep Schools which renovated the facility with the help of a $14 million grant and commenced instruction in 2013. It now offers a K-12 education with an emphasis on Science and Math.
