The 1,114,000 sq. ft. Huber Avenue Foundry was constructed in 1962 by Chrysler to replace the company's outdated Hamtramck Foundry. In 1972, 3,000 employees made engine blocks, axles and other automotive components. It was Chrysler sole source of 8 cylinder heads. Long the object of complaints about air pollution and working conditions, the foundry was closed in 1980 leaving 1,300 employees out of work. Acquired by the City of Detroit, the facility was renovated in 1988 and reopened in 1989 as the Central Service Facility for the Detroit Department of Water & Sewage.
