 railway, bridge

The North Missouri Railroad opened their bridge over the Missouri River during 1871. After a name change to the St. Louis, Kansas City and Northern, it was merged into the Wabash Railroad in 1879. The current bridge was built in 1936, north of the old bridge. The Wabash was merged into the Norfolk and Western in 1964, and is now part of Norfolk Southern. The last passenger service operated over the bridge was by N&W. This was St. Louis-Council Bluffs mixed trains 211 and 214, which ended during the mid 1960s. America's railroads built 32 crossings over the Missouri River, of which 23 remain in use.
