Constructed in 1976, for SKW Electo Metalurgic it operated until 1999, when it became Belcancour Silicon, a subsidiary of Timminco. In 2010 Timminco entered into a joint venture agreement with Dow Chemical and then sold its interest to Globe Specialty Metals in 2012. The plant contains two 24 mw and one 32 mw furnaces equipped with composite electrodes and two crushing and screening lines for metallurgical and chemical silicon. Silicon metal is used by the chemical, aluminum, electronics and solar industries and is a key raw material in both consumer and industrial products such as cosmetics, solar panels, sealants and computer components.
