Owned jointly by Alcoa (75%) and Rio Tinto (25%), it produces 413,000 tonnes of aluminum per year and has 1075 employees. The smelter was constructed by a consortium including, Alumax, Pechiney and Quebec Investment. The $1.65 billion plant was opened in 1986. Reynolds Metals purchased half of Pechiney's shares to become a 1/4 owner and in 1995 bought the shares of Investment Quebec. Alumax shares were acquired by Alcoa in 1998. Alcoa then became the owner or 75% of the shares in 2000 when it bought Reynolds Metals. Pechiney sold their remaining shares in 2000 to Alcan which was purchased by Rio Tinto in 2007.
