Hwagae village is located where the clean stream from Mt. Jiri joins the Seomjin River. Hwagae Market Place connecting Gyeongsangnam-do with Cheollanam-do used to be one of the five biggest markets in Korea before the Independence in 1945. The market took place every 5-day. Fire-field farmers from Mt. Jiri, in-land farmers from Chella-do Gurye and Geong-nam Hamyang, and peddlers from all over the country brought their living supplies. Moreover, fishermen from Yeosu, Gwangyang, Namhae, Samcheonpo, Chungmu, and Geoje sailed here to sell sea products like brown seaweeds, glue plants, and mackerels. Numerous tourists come and go along the cherry blossoms way in Hwagae Market Place, the setting place of ‘Yeokma’, the novel of Dong Ri Kim, and the roadside along the way from Hwagae Market Place to Ssanggaesa becomes the cherry blossoms tunnel in Spring. Hwagae Market Place where you can really feel the mood of the old country market becomes the famous place of meeting and union sharing the warm sympathy.
