Mae-mi Castle is named for the typhoon 'Mae-mi' that demolished the Island of Geoje in 2003.
Beak Sun-sam, from Geoje City, built Mae-mi Castle by himself to protect his farm and family after being hit by the powerful typhoon Mae-mi. Beak had no plan or design for construction, but once he started, he had the idea to build it like a Western-style castle, not like a traditional Korean castle.
No longer a residence, the unique and interesting castle has become a popular tourist destination. If here during a busy and crowded day, many tourists will be lined up to take pictures at a particularly special spot.
