A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is one of Japan's three famous castles. The current main tower-like building (keep) dates from 1601, escaping the fire bombings of WWII.
WR: This castle appeared in the 1967 James Bond movie You Only Live Twice and rates alongside Kinkaku Temple as one of the most visited Japanese architectural monuments.

Access: You can't miss it. Get off the Shinkansen ("Bullet Train") at Himeji. You can see it from the main exit of the train station. An easy walk, or ask the taxi driver for "Himeji-jo." Or just point at it.
