office building, dormitory, condominiums
165-foot, 15-story modernist multi-use building completed in 2006. Designed by Rothzeid Kaiserman Thomson & Bee (RKTB), the building has a 10-story section in the middle of the block, with a 6-story wing extending from it to the southeast corner. Attached to the northwest corner is a 15-story tower section that drops down to five floors where it meets Cathedral Parkway at the north facade.
The building contains 25 condominium units and residential accommodations for about 90 students of Barnard College, in addition to ground-floor office space for the Goddard Riverside Law Project and Goddard Riverside Options Center. Each has a separate entrance, with the residential tower having an address of 352 Cathedark Parkway, while the lower student housing component has its entrance at 207 Manhattan Avenue. The Options Center also faces Cathedral Parkway, while the Law Project entrance is on the south facade on West 109th Street.
The building components are clad in beige brick with orange highlights, above a limestone ground floor. To the south of the two tower sections is a shared courtyard, with the low-rise wing wrapping around its east side. The courtyard is landscaped and enclosed by a brick-and-iron fencing.
The 5-story base of the north tower is divided into four bays, with the condominium entrance in the east bay; it has metal-framed glass double-doors framed by windows and covered by a metal canopy. Two of the other bays have tripartite plate-glass windows while the middle one has a set of double-doors to the right of two window panes. The 2nd-5th floors have two windows in each bay that are arranged as two square panes stacked next to a narrower, tall pane, all set over black metal vents. The setback above the 5th floor is marked by a band of orange brick with a row of small, vertical notches and a stone coping. The recessed upper floors have orange-brick banding between each floor, and have two windows at each end like those below. The left side of the middle section has 4-pane French windows opening onto projecting metal balconies with curved glass railings, while the right side has another matching regular window and a very small, square window. A small setback above the 12th floor matches the 5th-floor setback, and there is another above the 14th floor, which is actually the main roof line. The 15th floor consists mainly of mechanical housings on the east side of the roof. The west end of the tower actually ends at the 12th floor, with the orange brick bands extending to the west end as open framework.
The east facade of the tower (as well as the north facade of the 10-story section at the middle of the block) having orange-brick banding. The only openings are a bay of small, square windows near the center of the tower's east facade, and a bay of paired windows near the middle of the 10-story section. The west and south facades of these two sections are also banded. The 12-story west part of the main tower has no openings on its west facade, but the south side has a bay of windows at each end, and smaller square windows in between. The west facade of the main tower portion has another bay of windows and one fronted by more balconies extending up to the 11th floor; there are also windows on the top floors rising above the 12-story section. The south facade of the main tower, facing the courtyard, has a tripartite window bay on the left, followed by a single-window, and a narrower bay of balconies.
The south facade of the 10-story middle component has, from west to east, a tripartite window, two of the standard window bays, and two more tripartite windows. Most of this section ends at the 9th floor, with another brick band, while the 10th floor rises up at the east end, above the 6-story southeast wing, where there is another bay of windows at the 7th-9th floors and two windows at the 10th floor.
The ground floor of the 6-story section's south facade has a grey metal service door at the west end, next to a set of double-doors to one of the office areas. There is a 4-pane plate-glass window on the right. The upper floors have two bays of windows, and the standard brick band at the top. The west facade also has two window bays, spaced farther apart. The east facade along Manhattan Avenue has four bays of large, tripartite plate-glass windows on the ground floor, and a north bay with the dormitory entrance that has glass double-doors below a metal canopy, very like the condominium entrance on Cathedral Parkway. The upper floors have a tripartite window configuration in each of the five bays. Rising up above the 6-story wing, the east facade of the 10-story middle section has two window bays on the south end (next to a bay of small, square windows) and another at the north end (on the 7th-9th floors) while the 10th floor has a regular window at the south end and two large tripartite windows to the north, topped again by a brick band.
