New York Studio School

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / West 8th Street, 8-14
museum, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, interesting place, Art Deco (architecture), 1830s construction, historical building

4-story building completed in 1838 as a series of rowhouses. They were altered and combined in 1931 by Auguste L. Noel (of the firm of Noel & Miller) into a private residence and art gallery for Mrs. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. Five years later Mrs. Whitney had him make a further alteration transforming it into public galleries, when it became the first location of the Whitney Museum of American Art. Its interior was designed by Robert Winthrop Chanler who also created a fantastical 20ft high fireplace for the main hall. The interior was decorated by Bruce Buttfield, while the eagle over the entry door was executed by Karl Free. Other murals were created by Robert Locher and Thomas H. Benton

The Studio School of Drawing, Painting & Sculpture was founded in 1964 and moved here shortly thereafter, combining the adjoining building at No. 14 as well. This 4-story Italianate structure was previously the American Youth Hostels' New York Council Building, and before that a townhouse completed in 1854.
