Spanish fort established in 1749.

One of the most extensive of the hundreds of frontier "presidios" or forts built by the Spanish across their colonial lands.

La Bahia began as a small post, but was expanded several times until by the 1830s it had an enclosed adobe parade ground with artillery bastions in the four corners.

Site of the Goliad Massacre of the Texas Revolution in 1836, where over 300 Texas militia under Col. Fannin were massacred by Gen. Santa Ana after surrendering. Fannin had been leading his men on a half-hearted attempt to try and relieve the siege of the Alamo in San Antonio when they were surrounded by Mexican troops.

The fact that the 150 Alamo defenders have gone down in history, and the 300 Goliad militia have been all-but forgotten is one of the weird quirks of history.
The lesson here- If you want to be remembered, go down swinging.
