Officers' Quarters 1 was the residence of the fort commander from its completion in 1872, replacing Officers' Quarters 3 in that capacity. Benjamin Grierson was the commanding officer who lived there the longest, from 1875 to 1882. Grierson added the west office, kitchen, and carriage house.
