The castle of San Severino (or Sanseverino), is the second largest in area in Italy. It was originally called Rota, and is located north of the town of Mercato San Severino in the province of Salerno, Italy. The original site was occupied and fortified by the Lombards, with later fortifications built up and expanded in the Norman and Hohenstaufen period. The castle was the residence of the Senseverino family in the Middle Ages. The best-preserved portions of the ruins are the castle nucleus in the northern corner, with traceable walls stretching from there along the western and southern sides (there are two fortified perimeters to the southeast) of the greater fortified area.
