The Asmara Massawa Railway was built between 1887 and 1911. In 1994, the Eritrean Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Construction, with the help of railway veterans, started the reconstruction process. No regular service runs at present, but it is possible to charter trains or 'litorine' (single car tram-type vehicles built by the Italians and now restored). This is now mostly for tourism as the main trade links are by road.
