  • Kechema Gara is home to two historic churches--St. (Kidus) Lalibela built in ca. 1850 by Dejazmach Germame Wolde Hawariat, and St. Michael built in 1950 by his grandson and then Governor of the Region, Dejazmach Amde Michael Hapte Selassie. St. Michael Church has an undergorund burial where in 1953, Dej. Amde transfered the remains of nine relatives including Dej. Germame's. The occasion was attended by a large number of Germame's descendants. Today, photos and bios are placed in the underground and are attracting visitors. Several sections of the old St. Lalibela Church, 1 km from St. Michael are still standing and a plan is underway to protect the reamining sections. The annual St. Michael day is celebrated on Hidar 12 or November 22 and attracts hundreds of worshipers from Adama and surrounding villages. The most recent development in Kechema is the Wind Power Generation Project planned to insall 34 units with total generation capacity of 51 MW. As of December 15, 2011, 10 Units have been installed and will be operational in early 2012. A new all weather 6 km access road connects the main Addis-Adama road from the Oromia Polce Academy to Kechema. This Project has made Kechema Gara the Wind Power Capital of Ethiopia! and a tourist attraction. The total population is estimated at less than 500. The economic mainstay of Kechema Gara and the adjacent area residents is agriculture including livestock. Children attend elementary school 2 kms. away. Access to potable water is also 2 kms. away from the village and the church. The Community is appealing to visitors to help finance a 1000-meter pipeline from the main water line. Villagers also lack electricity and are seeking assitance. They hope that with the installation of the Wind Power Project, electricity would be accessible to their church and homes. Please stop by and Visit Kechema Gara and the Historic Churches. The Panoramic View of Adam from Kechema Gara is breathtaking.
