18-24 West 95th Street (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / West 95th Street, 18-24
 rowhouse, apartment building

A row of four 4-story (including raised basements) Renaissance-revival residential buildings completed together in 1892. Designed by Martin V.B. Ferdon, they were originally all clad in brownstone (No. 22 has been resurfaced in brick), and arranged in an A-B-B-B pattern.

No. 18 at the east end was built as a mirror-image of the other three. It is painted a cream color, and the high stoop on the left is light brown, with rounded caps on the square newel posts. The parlor-floor entrance has paneled wood-and-glass double-doors and a transom flanked by pilasters with stylized capitals. To the right are two single-windows and banded piers with small panels of foliate ornament at the tops. The basement level is rough-faced and has two more windows that have iron grilles. A thin cornice sets off the upper floors, which have single-windows on the left, and two more single-windows in a very slightly projecting section on the right. At the 3rd floor there is rough-faced banding across the 2-window bay, and smooth keys at the 4th floor. The east bay at the 3rd floor has a hooded lintel, and there are panels of foliate ornament below each window. The facade is crowned by a dark-grey metal roof cornice with a rounded, floral-patterned mid-section and dentils at the base, which also follow the slight projection of the west bays.

No. 20 is painted white and has its stoop replaced by a ground-level entrance on the right, with a wrought-iron door below a small, curved metal canopy. The rest of the facade is a mirror-image of No. 18, except that the single-window replacing the original parlor-floor entrance has foliate ornament on the pilasters flanking it, and the roof cornice is black.

No. 22 has been re-clad in red brick, with the ground floor faced in white-painted stone. The stoop is replaced by a ground-level entrance on the right, with a black wood-and-glass door. The ornament has been stripped from the 2nd floor, which has three equal bays of single-windows with iron grilles. The stone banding and foliate ornament remains at the slightly-projecting 2-window bay at the 3rd floor, as do the cornices topping the 3rd floor, and the thinner one across the top floor. The roof cornice is painted white.

No. 24 at the west end is painted dark-brown, and retains its high stoop on the right, with a basement entry in its side. The facade is a mirror-image of No. 18, with the roof cornice painted brown.
