This tobacco research and production facility was among the first in the country to move away from the "vertically-designed all-in-one" style of construction and towards a more spread out design. The building at the north end of the district originally functioned as the American Tobacco Company's research and development laboratory, but is currently occupied as Richmond's field operations and maintenance facility. The southern buildings that front to Jefferson Davis Highway, which were originally the stemmery and drying plants, have been converted into apartments.
