The A&P Office Suites was built in 1929 as a warehouse for the Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A & P Grocers). At the time, it was one of the most modern buildings in the Midwest and was home to one of the largest bakeries in the country.

A & P, a prominent company that started as a New York tea and spice shop in 1859, grew to become the U.S.’s first national supermarket chain with 16,000 stores by the 1930s.

But through the 1950s and 1960s, its stores were outdated, and In 1975, the company and the heirs of the original owners launched a store closing program. As a result, the grocery depot located at 55 S. State Avenue in Indianapolis fell abandoned.

In 1985, an independent group bought the building and invested over $1 million renovating the tired building and converted the building to a mixed-use facility with both office, warehouse, and flex spaces.

It was run as a grocery depot again for a short while but was later repurposed as a Small Business Incubator, and the building was renamed the Entrepreneur Business Center.

In 2005, Indianapolis Entrepreneur, Scott Meyers, purchased the building and elevated the Business incubation Model to include training and assistance from the Small Business Administration, Business planning, and seed capital in the form of microloans to the small businesses made by Meyers himself. He also changed the name of the building to the Indianapolis Enterprise Center and joined the National Business Incubation Association, becoming the State’s Largest Small business Incubator.

Meyers sold the building in 2007 to an investor out of California who filed Bankruptcy, and Meyers and a group of investors acquired the building a 2nd time in 2012 and are in the process of restoring it to it’s earlier glory once again.

In 2015, the building received a much-needed Façade makeover at the Main entrance. The entire West Entrance received a number of masonry repairs, along with an updated paint scheme, and new signage, paying tribute to the history of the building. In September of 2015, the Indianapolis Enterprise Center was renamed "The A & P Building" with a press release and re-introduction to the marketplace.

As of 2019, the building's 188,000 square feet of office space is leased to a number of tenants.
